Philadelphia Volleyball is only possible due to the support of our dedicated volunteers hosts and organizers
Back when Philly Volleyball first began, there were only a couple events and everything was run by a singular person. Now, as we've expanded to have 25-40 events per week, the idea of just a couple volunteers trying to run everything is just not a viable way to run.
Our goal is to make it easy for community members to make the jump to become hosts. Our role is to deal with all the things that are easier to have an organization manage than for individuals, like insurance, finances and providing an established community platform so hosts can focus on their events.
There are few ways to become a host:
- We have a gym time slot or permit for a space (either we found a new space or a previous organizer can no longer run) that needs an organizer. When this happens we'll send out the word to our list of interested potential hosts.
- A community member has found a space and just needs our help with the details — we can provide organizational support to get he event off the ground and running, (including if they feel uncomfortable hosting on their own, we can find a buddy to help host)
Responsibilities as a host
At it's core being a host is about creating a welcoming environment for the community to play volleyball. Every host has a slightly different vibe, but every host is representing Philadelphia Volleyball.
We have some genral expectations for hosts running events:
- Posting/managing the event on Opensports and inviting people. While you can make some adjustments as needed, you are expected to give everyone a fairshot to join and honor the waitlist
- Being the point of contact for the gym/event space, and doing any set up needed (unlocking the venue, setting up the nets — this varies depending on the venue and type of event)
- Managing any disagreements that come up on the court
- For higher level events, making sure that the event is meeting the level you are advertising
Outside of these general requirements (and upholding the Philly Volleyball Code of Conduct) hosts are encouraged to take ownership of their events and run them how they would like.
Perks of hosting
- You get to make sure the event type/level you want to play in are running (and on a schedule convenient for you)
- You attend your events for free + one free guest spot
- You get to play an important part in maintaining and growing the volleyball community
