Finding Events
The fastest way to start playing with Philly Volleyball is Opensports. We use the app to organize and publicize events (pickup events, tournaments, and leagues can all be found on the app), so that's where you'll be able to see what events are happening, and sign up for them.
- Download the Opensports app
- Create an account
- Add a payment method
- Join the Philadelphia Volleyball group, and get a membership (the free one is fine until your ready to play more events.)
- Select and join an event

Just getting started with volleyball?
Volleyball is an amazing sport once you get into it, and become more fun the better you get. Serving and Receiving get more consistent, plays get more exciting, and rallies last longer. The only way to really get better, is to play more, and get more touches with the ball. Look for events that are labeled for "Beginner", "Recreational", or "All Levels". Once you get comfortable with the basics, you can move on the events labeled for "B" level players.
We also have some clinics available (some run by Philadelphia Volleyball and some by partners or local coaches)
While there's no substitute for actually playing, we have some tips compiled to help guide you on your volleyball journey.

New to Philadelphia?
Just moved to Philly? (or just stopping by?) Welcome to the City of Brotherly Love!
We try to make it easy to join the community here, with all our events being posted publicly on Opensports. No secret group chat. No Membership applications. Just join us on the app, sign up for an event, and start playing.
If you’re looking for a team, we have a free agent spreadsheet for players put their name down on, and form teams before the season. We highly encourage going to pickup events to meet people in person and make teams as it usually results in a better league experience.
We use a similar rating system similar to other regions (with B being the lowest level of competition and AA being the highest (not including Open) If you feel unsure, check out our rating guidelines.
Joining a team
While we are a non-profit sports club, we’re not a traditional volleyball club in the sense that we don’t have tryouts or a specific team to join. If you are just looking to play volleyball, we offer many pickup events—one-off 2-3 hour sessions—that you can signup for solo (or with friends) which is a great way to meet people and find teams. Pickup events are the best ways to meet people and find/create a team.
We do run leagues and tournaments where you sign up with your own team (or join an existing team) but teams are all created/organized by players, not Philadelphia Volleyball as an organization. Some of our beginner and intermediate level leagues may have an official free agent signup if they don't initially fill with full teams teams, and you can sign up for those on opensports.
